Within field movement of overwintered Colorado potato beetle: a patch-based approach

چکیده

After comparing the persistence of four marking techniques, a mark–release–resight study was performed to characterize mid-season movement of the Colorado potato beetle [Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say); Col., Chrysomelidae] simultaneously in a fallow and in a wheat field. Isolated patches of potatoes were installed in a random spatial arrangement on both fields similarly. Overwintered beetles were individually marked and released. Beetles showed limited inter-patch movement activity (15.9% of recovery events) with an overall mean daily dispersal of 0.309 m (0.0– 7 m). There was a significant difference in the insects movement distance between the fallow and wheat field but there was no difference between the movement distances of males and females. The distance between the patches varied between 1 and 7.81 m, and inter-patch movement was infrequent (15.9%). Results suggest that surrounding fields by wheat rather than fallow grounds should be studied as a possible strategy to reduce the movement of overwintered beetles between potato fields.

Resistance to neonicotinoid insecticides in field populations of the Colorado potato beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

BACKGROUND Neonicotinoid insecticides were first used commercially for Colorado potato beetle [Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae] control in the United States in 1995, and since then have been critical for management of this pest. Field populations from the northeastern and midwestern United States were tested from 1998 to 2010 for susceptibility to imidacloprid and thi...

Influence of Foliar-Applied Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis and an Early Potato Harvest on Abundance and Overwinter Survival of Colorado Potato Beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in North Carolina

The effects of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis applications and early harvest of potatoes on reducing the size of overwintering Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), populations in eastern North Carolina were investigated over 3 yr. In large-plot (0.04 ha) experiments, potato beetle densities and defoliation levels in plots that were either treated with B. thuringie...

Habitat manipulation in potato affects Colorado potato beetle dispersal

The Colorado potato beetle [Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say); Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae] is a significant pest of potatoes in North America and Eurasia and can cause severe defoliation and yield loss (Ferro 1985; Weber and Ferro 1994b). Managing the Colorado potato beetle with intensive pesticide applications has led to resistant populations (Forgash 1985; Ioannidis et al. 1991; Stewart et al. 1...

Population Dynamics of the Colorado Potato Beetle in an Agroecosystem with Tomatoes and Potatoes with Management Implications to Processing Tomatoes

We evaluated the population dynamics of Colorado potato beetle in processing tomatoes and potatoes using immigration proÞles, density through time, rates of development and survivorship. We also evaluated the beetleÕs inßuence on yield of processing cultivars. Colorado potato beetle immigrated into both crops. The Þrst available crop had the earliest immigration event and higher immigrating adu...

Survival and fecundity of Bt-susceptible Colorado potato beetle adults after consumption of transgenic potato containing Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis Cry3A toxin

Survival and fecundity of Colorado potato beetle adults, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), that had or had not fed previously on non-transgenic potato before exposure to transgenic potato containing the Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis Cry3A toxin (Bt) was investigated. In the laboratory, < 5% of first-generation adults survived after two weeks when restricted to Bt foliage since eclosi...
